Nigeria Boxer Lost To Morrocan...
Nigeria failed to win any medal at the 2017 African Boxing Championships , which ended in Brazzaville , Congo, on Sunday.
Seven boxers consisting of five men and two women represented the country at the tournament, which served as qualifiers for the 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships in Hamburg , Germany .
Egowa Richard lost to Moroccan Ouahdi Chouaib in the quarterfinals of the men ’ s 81 kg light heavyweight while Umeh Osita also lost in the quarterfinals of the men ’ s 69 kg welterweight to Mauritius ’ Clair Merven . The winner of the 2016 Lagos Governor ’s Belt , Rilwan Lawal , lost in the quarterfinals of the men ’ s lightweight to Morocco’ s Mohamed Hamout .
Ambrose Godwin crashed out in the preliminaries of the men ’s 91 kg heavyweight after he was beaten by Pembouabeka Yannick of Congo – and Godwin Okosun lost in the preliminaries of the men ’s 75 kg middleweight after Cameroon’ s Dieudonné Wilfred beat him by unanimous decision.
In the women’ s category , Yetunde Odunuga lost to Rhaddi Chaymae of Morocco in the 6 okg lightweight while Caroline Linus lost to DR Congo’ s Ndongala Esotia - Rosette in their 51 kg flyweight fight.
Meanwhile, Brazzaville 2015 All Africa Games silver medallist , Efetobor Apochi , has said the boxers were not to blame for their poor performances in the competition .
“The boxers who went to Congo were good but Nigeria would have done better if the country had gone to the event with its full team,” Apochi told our correspondent .
